At Derwen College, learning stretches far beyond the classroom. This month, students welcomed music and dance acts who brought with them inspiration, excitement, and valuable life lessons.
The Entitled Sons rock the stage
We were over the moon to welcome The Entitled Sons for a high-energy live performance that had everyone dancing, singing, and smiling from ear to ear!
The band – made up of brothers Charlie (lead vocals), Billy (keyboard), Rafferty (guitar), Laurie (drums), their dad Graham (bass), and supported by their mum, television property presenter Sarah Beeny – brought a powerful mix of talent and fun to our campus.
Their set featured some of their biggest hits, plus an exciting exclusive: a brand-new song, performed just for us! But it wasn’t just about the music, The Entitled Sons also spoke to students about the importance of staying safe online and the damaging effects of cyberbullying, sharing a message that resonated with everyone in the room.
After the show, the band told us we were “probably the best audience we’ve ever had!”

Jazz with the Adam Kubota Trio
The vibe shifted to smooth, vintage jazz as we welcomed the incredible Adam Kubota Trio for a Performing Arts workshop. Adam Kubota (bass, San Francisco), Tony Kieraldo (piano, New York), and Jack Amblin (drums, Wales), are international performers and members of the globally renowned Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox. With a sold-out show at the Royal Albert Hall just around the corner, we were honoured they took time from their busy tour to be with us.
The workshop gave students a glimpse into the world of jazz, with a modern flavour. Drummer Jack Amblin, who also happens to be the husband of our Functional Skills teacher Grace, added a fun surprise by demonstrating his tap dancing and washboard playing skills, to everyone’s delight.
Jack also also joined us earlier in the month for the role of judge at our Skills Competitions, offering encouragement and praise to students across a variety of disciplines.
Dance workshop
Jamie Jenkins, Head of Dance at National Youth Arts held a workshop for Performing Arts students. They engaged in various contemporary dance workshop activities before learning some exciting routines. Jamie shared his deep passion for dance with our students, bringing together diverse talents to create a fun and inspiring afternoon of dance. It was fantastic to have Jamie with us, offering our learners valuable opportunities to collaborate with industry professionals.
These experiences exemplify the Careers Education, Information, Advice, and Guidance we provide to our students. Thanks to all these talented professionals for sharing their expertise and inspiring students.
